When a lift gets its annual inspection, the hardware is where a trained eye lingers. Do the inspector’s hardware pass: grab each sheave and try to wobble it by hand with the load off — real wobble is a worn pin or bushing. Look for bushing material showing at the sides of sheaves. Cycle the locks and watch that every pawl snaps back smartly; a lazy pawl is a spring. Look for bright rub marks and metal dust anywhere parts move against each other.

A lock pawl with a weak or broken return spring can fail to engage while looking perfectly normal from the floor. Anything in the lock train — springs, pins, pawls — gets replaced on condition, immediately, not monitored. The locks are the part of the lift that catches everything else.
