Signs of an electrical fault

For the motor, check what it does when energized. Humming without turning points to a dead start capacitor or a seized pump; test the cap and try to turn the pump by hand. A motor that trips the overload after running briefly is drawing too much current — worn bearings, bad windings, or a binding pump. Feel for excess heat and listen for bearing growl or grinding.
