A 2-post lift cylinder is the single-acting hydraulic actuator that does the actual lifting on the column it lives in. On most Rotary, Challenger, and Forward 2-post lifts one cylinder pushes the carriage up from the base of the column while the other side rides on the equalizer cables; on some chain-style 2-post designs the cylinder is anchored at the top of the column and pulls the carriage up. Cylinders fail two ways: the rod seal starts to weep and you get a wet cylinder body and a puddle under the column, or the barrel wall scores from years of running dirty fluid and the seal cannot hold pressure any more. Once the rod is wet or the lift will not hold height overnight, it is a cylinder job.

Lift manufacturers revise parts mid-production without changing the model name, so the same lift bought two years apart can take two different revisions of the same component. Before you order, find the model plate on the lift — on most 2-post lifts it rides on one of the columns at eye level, on 4-post lifts it is usually on a column or the power-unit side runway — and note the full model number and serial. The serial dates the lift to a production run, and that is what decides which revision fits.

What to inspect while you have the lift open

• Lifting cables and equalizer cables — fraying, broken strands, cording (unwinding), kinks, or heavy rust
• Sheaves — cracks, chips, wobble, or a groove worn oversize; bushings pushed out the side
• Safety-lock ladders and pawls — bent teeth, sticky pawls, worn return springs
• Hydraulic hoses and fittings — cracking, weeping, brittle covers, rubbing points
• Slide blocks inside the column — bare metal or scoring means the blocks are worn and the carriage is riding steel on steel

Most shops that are already opening a 2-post lift for a cylinder job will replace the equalizer cables in the same visit — the labor is the same and the cables usually have similar hours on them.

Most 2-post lifts run on hydraulic oil equivalent to ISO-32; some older service records call out Dexron ATF. Check what the lift is currently running and do not mix. Clear fluid = ISO-32, red = ATF.

Cylinder work is pressure-critical. Lower the lift all the way, then hold the lowering-valve lever for a full 10 seconds after it is on the ground to bleed off any residual pressure before you break a hose loose — otherwise it will spray.
